One family tradition that never gets old is going out to find the perfect Christmas tree. However, what if an accident occurs and there are damages inside of your home while moving the tree in? This moment should be one of joy, not sadness. Therefore, before you start your preparations, make sure you have protection you can count on.
According to The Daily Tribune, the National Christmas Tree Association has reported that farm-grown Christmas tree purchases outnumber artificial ones by a 3-to-1 margin. This is very true for many residents who will go to local area tree farms over the next few weeks.
However, there are several tips the community can follow to help ensure their trees survive the holidays. "If you want to make sure your Christmas tree is fresh, cut it down yourself. If you go to a cut-your-own farm, you know it's fresh. You won't find a fresher, healthier tree anywhere else. Georgia has more than 100 Christmas tree farms. Buying locally also helps support our farmers in Georgia," stated Bartow County Extension Coordinator Paul J. Pugliese.
While the number of residential fires typically increases due to real Christmas trees, Cartersville Fire Marshal Mark Hathaway said this is not true for the city of Cartersville. He credits the lack of incidences to public awareness and newer LED lights, which use less power.

However, Hathaway advises residents not place trees near a heat source, such as a fireplace or vent. "I always recommend that you don't put it in a corner and the reason for that is if it's in a corner, if it catches fire, it's actually hitting two surfaces plus the ceiling. So the surface area is double [what] it would affect. So the fire grows so much faster when it's on a corner as opposed to on a flat wall."
